America on a beer bottle budget #2: New Jersey and New England

A while ago we wrote about our road trips to New Jersey and New England. If you recall we mentioned visiting some breweries, and that I (Shaun) would be writing posts about them – sorry it has taken so long, but here we are!

Black & White in New York City

We’ve just been on another wonderful trip into NYC, and for this trip I decided to get a bit more creative with photography, rather than take the same old pictures again. I haven’t done much black and white photography before, so I turned my camera settings to B+W for the whole day – it was a really interesting challenge! Looking for the changes in shadow depth rather than pops of colour made me change my thought process for composing a photo, and I think I got some pretty good results!

NYC: A view from above and more.

Another great day visiting NYC:

A helicopter flight over Manhattan (an engagement gift from some amazing friends), wandering the High Line (it got a lot greener since the last time we visited!), soaking up the vibes and culture at the 9th Ave Food Festival (they shut down 15 blocks!), and a dusk-time walk through Central Park (our first sighting of a raccoon, and a bird swallowed a fish whole!).

Roadtrip #2: Cape Cod and Boston

The past week has been full of little fishing villages, whales, beaches, and sunshine. Rhonda Burgundy took us all around the southern parts of New England, through Rhode Island and Massachusetts.

New London in Connecticut was an appropriate starting point for our journey into New England. We disembarked from the ferry from Long Island there, and headed towards Cape Cod. We travelled through the small state of Rhode Island, and stopped in Newport, home of the America’s Cup. What a gorgeous town! There were lots of little old houses and a cute village around the waterfront.

America on a beer bottle budget #1

Beer: it has come a long way over the years, thanks to a few clever buggers and advances in brewing technology. We now have an exciting culture of craft brewing popping up all around the world.

Over the next few months throughout America I hope to find lots of little craft breweries and taste some of the great beers this country has to offer.

Road Trip #1: Jersey Shore, NJ, and New York, NY

We’ve decided to stay in the States for a little while, so we bought a van that we can take on road trips. Buying the van turned out to be a hideously convoluted and nightmarish process, but we got there in the end – thank goodness! Her name is Rhonda Burgundy and she’s a delightfully ugly Chevy. Introducing Rhonda:

Montauk, NY: In which we cycled to America’s 4th oldest lighthouse

Montauk is a small town that is situated at the very end of Long Island. We’d heard it was a cute little town with a nice ride out to a lighthouse, so seeing as we are new owners of mountain bikes (thanks Walmart!) we decided to go and explore!

The Hamptons, NY: In which we saw enormous mansions

Spring has finally arrived in the Hamptons! We have been here for a couple of weeks now, and it has gone from -10°C and sleet to a tropical 13°C and beautiful sunshine.

 

NYC: in which we covered more of Manhattan

We’ve walked many miles in the last week – NYC is most definitely a walking city! We’ve loved being in the city and feel like we’ve explored a lot of it, but there is still heaps left to do! Until next time NYC…
